Our dog Lacey was diagnosed with bladder stones back in January/February like a day after Sean got laid off of work. The vets told us she would need surgery, but we were hoping we could help her pass them (because they were small) without the surgery via a more natural route.
Well after she finished her antibiotics in January, she seemed to be so much better. No passing stones, no blood in her urine, eating, drinking and playing and being her usual self. Well she started passing bigger stones Thursday evening, and then Friday afternoon at 12:30 passed another big stone. Except she kept crying to go outside, so I went and just stayed with her outside.
She kept trying to pee with no luck, so I went inside to look up some info about it. They said if they are that large that they will need surgery to remove them, and if they vomit then they really need to be seen asap. So literally 5 minutes after reading that she vomited 3 times and so we called the vets to get her seen right away.
The vet was very nice and said at first that she will take the stones we brought in and send them out to be analized because they might be able to treat her with diet instead of surgery. She got an x-ray done just to make sure there was no blockage, and to compare it to the x-ray we had done in January.
As she was waiting for the x-ray to come back, she did a physical exam on Lacey and when she felt her bladder, she said that it was really big and that she most likely had a blockage and needed surgery today.
Unfortunately, they weren't able to do it there because there was only one vet on staff, so they had us go to the Emergency Vets about 30 minutes away. She told us just to head there and she would call them and let them know we were on our way.
So we got there and they didn't seem to have any idea we were coming, but said that they would get her in asap. So finally they get her in, and gave us a quote of 1600-2000, which is way more than we had available to us in our account. We don't have a credit card and they had us apply for the care credit which of course got denied because our credit is like a 3. So by then I was really upset and crying because my dog needs to get fixed but I have no idea how we are going to pay for it.
So the nurse comes in and says to us, well our original vet is new to the area and called the wrong vets to tell them we were coming. So then the other vet called the Emergency Vets to see if we had gone there, which we had so they got pissed because they thought the Emergency vet was "stealing their patients" and hung up on them. So they gave us the option of going there, but they are hard-asses and require full payment up front and they are much more expensive, and got a quote of 3,000 for Lacey to have surgery there. I was like ahhhhh we will just stay here, we are already here and we have heard bad things about the other vets.
So the vet nurse also was super nice and said they could work out a payment plan with us, so we didn't need to worry about it, which was such a huge relief off of our shoulders.
Lacey went through her surgery really well, and they had told me she might be able to come home Saturday night or Sunday morning. But Saturday morning at like 7 am they called and said she could come home already and she was recovering great!
So she is home now and doing really well. She is resting right now and she just seems really glad to be home.
